Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 4-5 large potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup (240ml) beef broth
- 1 cup (240ml) milk or heavy cream
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheese (cheddar or your favorite)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp dried rosemary
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Cook the ground beef: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they are translucent. Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, thyme, and rosemary. Once cooked, set aside.
- Prepare the potatoes: Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or a sharp knife.
- Assemble the dish: In a large baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes. Layer the remaining potato slices on top of the beef.
- Prepare the sauce: In a small saucepan, heat the beef broth and milk or cream over medium heat until just about to boil. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes and beef in the baking dish.
- Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Add cheese and finish baking: Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Serve: Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
